Cicero on friendship

From Cicero’s late essay, Laelius: On Friendship

‘And so friendship is quite different from all the other things in the world on which we are accustomed to set our hearts. For each and every one of those other objectives is specifically adapted to some single purpose—riches, to be spent; power, to secure obedience; public office, to win praise; pleasure, to enjoy oneself, good health, to be free from pain and make full use of one’s bodily endowments. Friendship, on the other hand, serves a great host of different purposes all at the same time. It whatever direction you turn, it stll remains yours. No barrier can shut it out. It can never be untimely; it can never be in the way. We need friendship all the time, just as we need the proverbial prime necessities of life, fire and water. I am not speaking of ordinary commonplace friendships, delightful and and valuable though they can be. What I have in mind instead is the authentic, truly admirable sort of relationship, the sort that was embodied in those rare pairs of famous friends.

Friendship, then, adds a brighter glow to prosperity and relieves adversity by dividing and sharing the burden. And another of its very remarkable advantages is this. It is unique because of the bright rays of hope it projects into the future: it never allows the spirit to falter or fail. When a man thinks of a true friend, he is looking at himself in the mirror. Even when a friend is absent, he is present all the same. However poor he is, he is rich: however weak, he is strong. And may I attempt to convey an even more difficult concept? Even when he is dead, he is still alive. He is alive because his friends still cherish him, and remember him, and long for him. This means that there is happiness even in his death—he ennobles the existences of those who are left behind.

Take away the bond of kindly feeling from the world, and no house or city can stand. Even the fields will no longer be cultivated […]’

-from Laelius: On Friendship, composed by Cicero in the summer of 44 BCE

pretty sick of it

I am sick of being blamed for a person's paranoia, fear, and them claiming they are a victim. Sometimes I am amazed at how adults justify and place blame on others, just so they can manipulate influence and gain support in their frivolous lives. Especially when that person had me believing it was something that I did, when in all actuality they were just as guilty of those actions or more. Stop taking your guilt for your actions and pushing onto others to make yourself feel better, take accountability of your own actions.

Lo there do I see my father. Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers. Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, in the Halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live...forever.

Ahmed Ibn Fadhlan

"Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things. This was not among them. But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well. For all we ought to have thought, and have not thought; all we ought to have said, and have not said; all we ought to have done, and have not done; I pray thee God for forgiveness."

Right and Mighty Forever

Masions of the Lord

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew -
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

occupy

Just saw a blog about Occupy the military, and I am truly disgusted. Mainly because of the lack of understanding about the military culture, how we operate, and the open suggestion of military personnel to commit treason. The person probably doesn't understand that he is trying to promote treason and descent amongst the ranks in the military, and does not understand the Chain of command. The United States Military is not political, nor is it supposed to be. We are headed by civilians who are appointed by elected officials, and the commander and chief is the President of the United States who is also, an elected official. The disconnect between civilians and what the military is, and does, and how it operates is amazing. And I even see it in my own ranks, of young and old service members who do not take the time to do their homework and understand the profession we are in. And to the occupy the military suggestion. No, plain and simple. There are two major documents one should read to understand the U.S. Military, The Constitution and The United States Code.

European invasion

I am not sure what it is, but seriously I love music that comes over to us via Europe. Radiohead was very big in my youth, as was music like Oasis and the Prodigy (yes I know most of this is English) something about it is super chill and speaks to me. But then to the rock of Germany with Rammstein, and the beauty and the beast type metal out of Scandinavia. But house music can truly only be described via the European continent. So a lil ol' a lil' new.

They can' take that away from me

The way you wear you hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no! They can't take that away from me

The way you smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no! They can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again
On this bumpy road to love
Still I'll always, always keep
The memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you've changed my life
Oh, no! They can't take that away from me
No! They can't take that away from me

Not without a lawyer, anyway

We may never, never meet again
On this bumpy road to love
Still I'll always, always keep
The memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we dance till three
The way you've changed my life
Oh, no! They can't take that away from me
No! They can't take that away
No they won't take that away
Can't take that away
Can't take that away
Won't take that away
Won't take that away
Can't take that away from me

Craig

This one is good. He is very funny. But some of his more serious stuff is amazing and from the heart. If you want one, and I might post it, that is really powerful, find the Eulogy he does for his father back from 2006. He and Dr. Drew Pinksy talk about grief, closure, and most important what is important in life. Find it. Or I might just post it like I said.
